Happy Birthday Langston Hughes

February is African American History Month. It is also National Pie Month (or maybe it’s called Great American Pie Month, it does not seem to be an official holiday month).

Today is the Birthday of the great American author, poet, playwright and more, Langston Hughes (1902-1967). Here is his poem about a segregated Manhattan, “Island” from his book, “Montage of a Dream Deferred”.

Between two rivers,
North of the park,
Like darker rivers
The streets are dark.

Black and white,
Gold and brown–
Chocolate-custard
Pie of a town.

Dream within a dream,
Our dream deferred.

Good morning, daddy!

Ain’t you heard?
