Gravenstein Apples Are Here!

Gravenstein Apples from Marshall Ranch in SebastopolGravensteins are here and they are a bit early, but tart and delicious and ready for pie. They will probably go away a bit early as well, but we usually get a good month or so. We just got our first couple of cases from Marshall Ranch in Sebastopol and are working furiously to convert them into pie form for you! You may have noticed apple pie has been off the menu for a bit, but it is starting up again now!

It’s heating up

weather reportOver the next few days it will be unseasonably hot for our town for this time of year. While we will have plenty of hot savory pies and cold salad, we also have nice cold ones, like chocolate cream, banana cream and more. Or if you are feeling fruity, try an Apricot, Apple or Strawberry Rhubarb pie topped with some ice cold Straus organic vanilla ice cream. Just thirsty? We’ve got cold soda , house made iced teas, cold brewed iced coffee and our famous Strawberry Rhubarb Lemonade is back!

You can enjoy all this and more sitting outside in the shade in Helen Putnam Plaza!

Quince

quince

What is this furry and fragrant fruit? You see them growing all over the county. They look like an apple or a pear but if you eat them raw they are too astringent, so maybe you thought they were just ornamental. The quince is a relative of the apple, pear and rose. While astringent and dry when eaten fresh, it becomes floral in flavor and tender when cooked. We have made a honey infused quince and apple pie for you. Come on in and try it.

It is still summer!

It will be heating up around here this weekend and we have Straus organic ice cream and pie! But you don’t have to put ice cream on top of your pie, you could get iced coffee a la mode or a root beer float with your pie! And since it is still summer, we still have summer pies like triple berry, strawberry rhubarb, peach, nectarine blackberry and more. And since it is almost fall we have apple and maybe even pear ginger cardamom. And don’t forget our fine selection of home made cold beverages…

Gracie Allen liked pie
Today is also the birthday of comedy icon, Gracie Allen,co-star with George Burns on the “Burns and Allen Show”. In addition to making pie from sponsor Carnation Evaporated milk, one early episode features the following, “In the second early episode, a teenaged friend of George and Gracie’s stays with them for the weekend. While helping young Emily with her Geometry homework, Gracie voices her concerns about the education system. Gracie is absolutely certain that “pie are round … not squared!””

And it is also the birthday of Mick Jagger, who is supposedly the subject of a verse towards the end of that endless song, “American Pie”. Mick Jagger is also a fan of Indian food and being English, must like pie. He should have our Curried Cauliflower and Chickpea pie!
